Philip Johnson is Director of the Environment & Health Program at The Heinz Endowments. He directs the foundation’s environmental stewardship grantmaking and research work focusing on air and water quality and environmental impacts on human health. He manages a grants portfolio and community initiatives that focus on environmental systems, ecology and ecosystems, public health and primary prevention, susceptible populations and vulnerable communities, and energy impacts and alternative energy. He directs the Breathe Project Initiative that focuses on addressing the region’s poor air quality and environmental health challenges. He also serves on the cross-programmatic African American Men and Boys Initiative. Phil has worked for government agencies and nonprofits in fisheries/ecological restoration, public health and environmental issues. While at Yale University, Phil earned a masters degree in public health, a masters degree in environmental science, and a PhD in risk analysis and management. Phil currently serves as co-chair of the Health & Environmental Funders Network steering committee.
