Computers. Office supplies. Flooring in schools. Many of these products are often filled with toxic chemicals and materials, like vinyl plastic, phthalates and flame retardants. But what if we could change that? What if we could harness the power of government spending to promote safer products that don’t contain these harmful chemicals? What if government agencies could use their purchasing power to help transform the marketplace away from toxic chemicals?

To do just that, CHEJ is pleased to announce the release of a brand new fact-pack to assist government agencies in purchasing safer products. The package of fact-sheets summarize the health hazards of toxic chemicals commonly found in products, relevant policies that promote safe products, summary case studies of governments and businesses that are phasing out the purchase of toxic goods, and cutting-edge resources for purchasers to identify and purchase safer products.

Help us spread the word! Visit www.chej.org/greenpurchasing to download the fact-pack, check out our online presentation, and share them with purchasers/schools in your community to help promote a healthier community.

What can we do about it, what sort of recourse do we have?"

These questions are posed in the most recent Environmental Health Policy Institute from Physicians for Social Responsibility. Its topic is indoor air pollution, which is addressed by several contributors, including Claire Barnett, executive director of Healthy Schools Network, whose piece discusses indoor air quality and the importance of prevention in the school environment.
