December 9-12, 2008
The Institute at the Golden Gate, Sausalito, CA
December 9-10: HEFN’s National Funder Retreat
To strengthen grantmaking and strategic collaboration at the intersections of health, environment, and equity. Retreat begins with lunch Tuesday, wraps on Wednesday at 5 pm followed by a joint HEFN / HEFN-California dinner. Retreat Co-Chairs 2008 are David Fukazawa, The Kresge Foundation, and Len McNally, The New York Community Trust. Participants are encouraged to stay for the HEFN-CA Convening.
December 11-12: HEFN-California's 3rd Annual Convening
For funders supporting environmental health and environmental justice in California. Begins Thursday at 9 am and concludes at noon on Friday. Participants are encouraged to join the preceding national funder retreat and joint dinner on December 10th. HEFN-California 2008 Co-Chairs are Earl Lui, The California Wellness Foundation, and Arlene Rodriguez, The San Francisco Foundation.
Why join these meetings?
Participants will come away with information, strategies, and collaborative relationships, as well as a renewed understanding of the difference this area of philanthropy is making in the world.
The national retreat agenda is focused on strategic collaboration, aiming to strengthen investments, relationships, and our collective capacity to:
- Tackle toxics and strategies for chemical policy and market reforms;
- Elevate environmental justice and women’s leadership in this field;
- Integrate greener chemicals, health, and equity into green economic strategies;
- Build communities’ capacity to address their environmental health and justice needs; and
- Analyze investment trends and needs in the field.
The California convening will bring together funders supporting environmental health and justice work in the state. The convening will provide peer learning and relationship-building, reports from CA grants tracking, and discussion of priorities for collaboration on issues like:
- Chemical policy reform in California;
- Environmental justice participation in AB32 / state climate implementation;
- Cumulative exposure policy to better protect impacted communities;
- Water; and
- Air pollution associated with ports, goods movement, and diesel vehicles.
**These meetings are for HEFN members and their funder colleagues; others interested may contact hefn@hefn.org.
