National Coalition brings together EPA, ED, CDC, and NGOs to expedite EPA’s Healthy Schools Initiative: report expected 5/31

With support from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation for the Coalition for Healthier Schools, on April 14-15, 2011, Healthy Schools Network coordinated a facilitated expert panel session to advance the EPA’s Healthy Schools Initiative and structure the national Coalition’s agenda. Assembled were 7 staff from EPA, the federal Department of Education, and the Centers for Disease Control, with 24 national and state NGO environment, health, and education advocates and others engaged on environmental health in schools. Generous support was also provided by the National Education Association –Health Information Network and the American Federation of Teachers. With a collaboratively developed agenda, the fruitful discussions centered on the agencies’ current programs and resources and discussed the challenges and opportunities ahead in working with state agencies to advance the new federal guidelines on environmental health in schools. The NGOs also set forth next steps in a strategic plan to sustain work nationally and in the states regarding children’s environmental health and learning. The final report is anticipated May 31.
