Position Description
The Breast Cancer Fund (BCF) is the leading national organization focused on preventing breast cancer by eliminating its environmental causes. BCF mobilizes the public to secure the changes needed to stop this devastating epidemic through public education, policy initiatives, corporate accountability campaigns, media and communications strategies, outdoor challenges, and other innovative programs. BCF’s communications department is an expanding, dynamic team that handles media relations, advertising, marketing, branding, messaging, Web presence and publications for the organization, its programmatic initiatives and its major events. We are seeking a Communications Coordinator who will focus on helping to develop and implement effective media outreach strategies and activities.
Responsibilities
• Work with the communications team and staff to develop and implement comprehensive communications strategies that further BCF’s mission, programs and campaigns;
• Create and implement innovative media outreach plans related to BCF’s program and policy priorities, with a focus on legislative and corporate accountability campaigns;
• Contribute to messaging and framing on state and national policy initiatives;
• Cultivate mainstream, alternative and issue-based media relationships in strategic markets;
• Monitor and engage with online communities on issues related to program and policy priorities;
• Write and edit communications materials including news releases, media advisories, op-eds, letters to the editor, talking points, blog posts, etc.;
• Initiate and respond to print, broadcast, online and other new media inquiries and act as primary contact for incoming media calls;
• Maintain press packets and organizational collateral for media events and outreach;
• Organize press conferences and briefings;
• Work with organizational spokespeople on media interview training, speechwriting and presentation, and tailoring messages for a variety of audiences;
• Maintain media lists and media clips database. Produce quarterly media coverage reports.
Desired Qualifications
At least 2 years experience in public relations, media advocacy, journalism or a related field, with an emphasis on direct media outreach;
• Excellent communication and organizational skills;
• Exceptional ability to handle multiple tasks while demonstrating attention to detail;
• Demonstrated ability to work with tight deadlines;
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team environment;
• Demonstrated commitment to excellence in customer service and performance;
• Knowledge of AP style;
• Experience in environmental health, women’s or other advocacy-related communications a plus.
Terms
Salary: Starts at $45K
Hours: Full time
Classification: Exempt
